Chief Grovo came in and had multiple items to go over.

The Selectmen chose a recipient for the S. D. Hanson Scholarship.  Charisse Keach will notify the Guidance Office.

The Board had a brief discussion on a payroll issue and talked about Pleasant Point Park.  They are going to set up a meeting with the Trustees next week to make sure they are all on the same page with what they are doing at the Park this year

Another resident came in with a property issue.

  • Review of Projects and Issues
Selectman Harmon reported that the Board received some letters today from the Narragansett Number One Foundation funding some grant requests that the Town had submitted.  She thanked the Narragansett Number One Foundation for funding the fireworks request for Buxton Community Days and also a grant for Keep the Heat On.  They have been very generous to the town with our grant requests

Last Thursday Selectman Harmon attended the District Budget Meeting.  She said when they took a vote later in the evening there were 66 votes and according to Buxton’s Registrar of Voters there were 24 Buxton voters there.  Selectman Harmon lamented that this is a greater than $45 million dollar budget and less than 100 people were there to vote.  She went on to say there will be a yes or no question on the ballot and the amount of the budget will not be shown.

Selectman Burns reported that he has been in and out of the office.  He mentioned the school budget vote last week and said there was a pathetic turnout and he does not understand the apathy.  People’s taxes are affected greatly by it; there is another $272,000 increase over last year’s budget.  He said there are over 3,000 students in SAD 6 and even the parents of those students did not show up.  He said people want to complain about taxes and complain about the school but they have to get out and do something about it; show up at some of these meetings and vote.

Selectman Booker said she has been in most days going through mail and talking with whoever is here to find out what is going on.  She also talked about the SAD 6 budget meeting and vote.  She mentioned the mailer that the school sent out and recommended that people read that and come out and vote on June 10.

Selectman Harmon said we will be voting on June 10 and encouraged everyone to come out and vote.  She talked about some of the items on the ballot and said if anyone is interested in becoming a write-in candidate they should call the Town Office and express their interest.

Selectman Burns said there are three candidates running for Sheriff and there will be several ballots because of the different Districts and Wards which could be a bit confusing.  Both Selectmen mentioned that Absentee Ballots are also available.
